Stefano Discetti is Full Professor and Vice Director for Strategy and Promotion of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid He received his PhD 2013 in Aerospace Engineering from University of Naples Federico II. He is currently leading an ERC Starting Grant project on flow diagnostics and control His main research interests are in the field of development of optical measurement techniques for fluid flows, data driven techniques, and machine learning applied to flow measurements and control. He is member of the Editorial Board of the JCR journal Measurement Science and Technology, of the Scientific Committee of the International Symposia on Particle Image Velocimetry, of the Scientific Council of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer and of the Steering Committee of the Special Interest Group on Particle Image Velocimetry of ERCOFTAC

Data driven methods for aerospace engineering

The increasing amount of data available thanks to software/hardware advances in all sectors of engineering has been pushing towards the development and refinement of data-driven techniques for a number of purposes, including modeling, dimensionality reduction, extraction of patterns, etc In this course the students will be given an overview of some prominent examples of data-driven methods, with special focus on application in fluid mechanics.
The course will cover techniques for time-frequency analysis, dimensionality reduction, data enhancement manifold learning. Worked examples in Matlab will be included throughout the lectures.

The course will be held on 17, 18, and 19 July 2023 and will be structured as follows:
