For the next event in the Aerospace PhD Seminar Series, we will have the pleasure of hosting Dr. Antonio Concilio researcher at Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA)
The event will take place in the Salón de Grados on Thursday 26th January at 12.30 p.m., and will be streamed.

Antonio Concilio graduated in aeronautics engineering with honors at the University of Napoli Federico II (Italy) in 1989, where he was also awarded his PhD in aerospace engineering in 1995. In 2007, he completed the ECATA Master course in Aerospace Business Administration, at ISAE-Supaero, Toulouse (France). His main research interests concern vehicles noise and vibration control for increased comfort and components protection, smart structural systems design, integrated sensor networks, and morphing. Since 2005, he has been a lecturer on Smart Structures at the PhD School of the Federico II University. Since 2004, he has held courses on that subject for other Academies, and for postgraduate students within National projects. According to Scopus, at the date he is author of 172 papers published in specialized journals or presented at conferences, with 1680 citations in almost 900 documents. His H-index is 23 (Dec. 6th, 2022).
Since 1989, he has been a researcher at the Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA), Italy, where he is the Head of the Adaptive Structures Division. He led CIRA activities within several EU and nationally funded research contracts on smart structures, and noise and vibration control. He was the European Scientific coordinator of the Identification of an Aircraft Passenger Comfort Index project (IDEA PACI, 1998-2001) and the National Project Manager of the Design and Realization Methods of Intelligent Systems for the Monitoring and Control of Aeronautic and Aerospace Structures Project (SMART, 2002-2006). He led an international team to develop, manufacture, and test an Adaptive Wing Trailing Edge (ATED) within the large EU Smart Aircraft Intelligent Structures project (SARISTU, 2011-2015). Currently, he is leading the Italian team in an International project on SHM systems development (RESUME, 2020-ongoing). In 2018, he earned the Italian National Qualification as Full Professor (ASN).
“An Introduction to Adaptive Structures”
Abstract:
Adaptive or smart structures are systems able to bear external loads, integrated with sensor and actuator networks and in principle governed by a control system, which make them able to adapt their shape, and other characteristics, to different operational needs. Generally speaking, an adaptive structure can host one or more of the elements mentioned above. By definition, it can be equipped with ordinary actuators or sensors as long as they are embodied in the reference system. Special materials capable of transforming different types of energy into mechanical energy (thermal, electrical, etc.), the so-called smart materials, are even used; since their implementation is usually far from being assessed from an industrial point of view, they are commonly employed only if there are specific requirements in terms of space, weight, and so on.
There are many different applications of the adaptive structures in literature; this short talk is focused on specific experiences carried out by CIRA in the field in the latest years, and dealing with noise and vibration control, sensing, and morphing. Integration aspects, and actual implementation examples are introduced and discussed. Piezoceramic materials, and shape memory alloys are presented, providing some details about their peculiar properties, and the way to model them. Optical fibres will be also considered.
The seminars will begin at 12.30 p.m. and will take place in the Auditorium Salón de Grados (Padre Soler) campus of Leganés.
No previous registration is required.
